HOSPITALLER WORK

HospitallerIndividual members of the Australian Association resident in either Australia or overseas provide active and practical support in fields as diverse as hospital administration, palliative care, diocesan administration, care for disabled adults and children, assistance in the education of migrant children, support for Catholic positions in Bioethics and opposition to campaigns to promote abortion, euthanasia and the harvesting of human embryos.

The President of the Australian Association is foundation co-chair of the International Association of Catholic Bioethicists, which is directed and co-sponsored by the Canadian Association of the Order of Malta.

Malteser InternationalThe Australian Association is a foundation member of Malteser International, and contributed $60,000 AUD in immediate relief funds for victims of the Boxing Day tsunami to Australia's north.

In 2006, the Australian Association responded to a call from the Grand Master for aid to relief works of the Lebanese Association. Donations from members and the public so far totals $50,000. This Appeal is continuing.

Other important overseas projects of the Australian Association include support for the comprehensive development of the Mount Sion Centre for the Blind in Goroka, Papua New Guinea, where, since 1996, over 5,000 local people have had their sight restored by cataract surgery.

In Queensland the Australian Association provides major support to Mt Olivet Hospital and the Mt Olivet Home Care Service and for St Gabriel's Early Intervention Centre for the Hearing Disabled.

In Victoria the works of the Australian Association include Eastern Palliative Care in Victoria, through which the Order of Malta provides State-funded palliative care services to a population catchment of one million persons in Melbourne, in partnership with the Sisters of Charity and two secular palliative care support groups.

HospitallerIn New South Wales the Australian Association provides substantial support to Gorman House which provides meals and shelter for alcoholic and homeless men and women, and the Norma Parker Respite Centre which provides respite for those caring for disabled persons.

In South Australia the Order supports the Adelaide Day Centre for Homeless Men, the Hutt Street Centre for Homeless People and the work of the OPAL Organisation (Overseas Pharmaceutical Aid for Life) which packs and ships large quantities of cartons of donated medicines to Timor Leste (East Timor).
