THE ORDER OF MALTA VOLUNTEERS The Order of Malta Volunteers are not knights or dames themselves, but people attracted by the Order's goals of defence of the Faith, and service of the poor. They are the youth apostolate of the Order in Australia. Today many Catholics are rising to the challenge of presenting the Faith in a convincing way to a contemporary world, and understand that Christ calls for willing hands to undertake His work among the needy. The antiquity and the broad reach of the Order of Malta make it perfectly placed to educate and encourage people to meet these tasks. In Sydney, volunteers meet monthly for an evening of instruction, analysis and debate on matters of contemporary Faith, motivated by sincere love of the Church and defence of her Truth. The general age range of those who come is from school leavers to people in their mid-30s. In this way we hope to prepare young Catholics to help dispel the doubt that holds some back from totally embracing the Faith, or at least to resolve misconceptions among the friendly. The Order's ancient motto, "To serve the poor and needy" is now demonstrated by providing practical help to the aged and sick in a variety of areas where our volunteers may be welcomed, from nursing home visitation, to assisting disabled young people. The Order of Malta has a particular interest in the preparations for World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney, and will be coordinating care for the many disabled young people who will come to Australia to meet the Holy Father and hundreds of thousands of other young Catholics from around the world. Volunteers and their friends will supply the helping hands they will need. If you would like to join us as a regular Volunteer, please contact the Order of Malta at volunteers@smom.org.au. |
