WORLD YOUTH DAY 2008 World Youth Day (www.wyd2008.org) is the largest youth event in the world and will be held in Sydney from 15-20 July 2008. Organised by the Catholic Church, World Youth Day gathers young people from around the world to build bridges of friendship and hope between continents, peoples and cultures. In August 2005, Sydney was chosen to host the XXIII World Youth Day. The announcement was made by Pope Benedict XVI in Cologne in August 2005."And now, as the living presence of the Risen Christ in our midst nourishes our faith and hope, I am pleased to announce that the next World Youth Day will take place in Sydney, Australia, in 2008. We entrust to the maternal guidance of Mary most holy, the future course of the young people of the whole world." His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, 21 August 2005 The Order of Malta will be very much involved in this wonderful event, doing what it has done for almost 1000 years - helping the needy and disabled. The Order will be specially active at the World Youth Day Closing Mass on Sunday 20 July 2008 at Randwick racecourse where hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend, including tens of thousands of disabled. |
